The Thing We Call The Present

People go on and on about the future, don’t they? I have no problem with that, only what about The Present? The Present gets a raw deal in my book. I mean the past is massive, isn’t it? All that endless history and stuff; it’s amazing and much applauded. And the future is even more massive in a funny sort of way; and exciting, because we know it will happen, but we don’t know how. But then you get to The Present: about as exciting as hair removal is for someone who has a phobia of hair removal. The present exists barely for the blink of an eye, and mostly we don’t even bother thinking about it, it just sort of happens and then it’s gone. In school pupil terms it is the freakishly feeble little fella at the back of the class who barely ever gets noticed. The poor present, we really need to appreciate it more, because it really does deserve it. Think about it: where would we be without it?

Recently I have started a campaign (only in my own mind) of appreciating the present as much as is mentally possible to do without thinking too much and giving my brain a hemorrhage (a wild pigeon that I was watching in the train station with great attention last night almost tipped me over the edge when its eyes and my eyes connected and it seemed to say “leave me alone, can’t you see I am trying to have a poo on someone’s head here?!”
